       The Kas Plateau Reserved Forest, also known as the Kaas Pathar, is a plateau situated 25 kilometres west from Satara city in Maharashtra, India.         At a distance of 145 km from Pune, 29 km from Satara, and 298 km from Mumbai, the Kaas Plateau, also known as the Kas Pathar, is a vast volcanic lateritic plateau situated in the Satara district of Maharashtra. It is most beautiful Tourist place in Satara..Popularly known as the Plateau of Flowers, Kaas Plateau is one of the famous a popular picnic spot among nature lovers during late monsoons. The plateau is situated at an altitude of 1250 m and is approximately 1,150 hectares in area. The name ‘Kaas’ originates from the Kaasa tree.  Kaas Plateau was formed by volcanic activities and is covered by a thin soil This area comes under a very high rainfall zone. Due to this, flora and fauna of the region are quite unique. These unique ecological features make Kaas one of the hotspots of biodiversity.

       The Plateau is well known for its unique biosphere, high hill plateaus, and grasslands. During monsoon season, especially in the month of August, the Plateau comes to life with various types of flowers. Kaas has more than 900 different species of flowering plants of which 620 are listed on the IUCN Red List. These include orchids, shrubs such as the Karvy,
Kaas Plateau overlooks the dense evergreen forests of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and serves as the catchment area of the Koyna Dam. This is also a haven for bird watchers, as many species of birds can be spotted here. There is a wonderful lake called Kaas Lake, which is situated towards the south of the Plateau. Kas Pathar attracts many tourists, scientists, and nature lovers. To control possible damage by excessive tourism, the Government has restricted the number of visitors to 2,000 per day. Walking through the flowers covering the Plateau is a wonderful experience.  The best time to visit Kas Pathar is from August to October. Many people visit Kaas during the rains; however, the plants bloom only in late August to September.

Thoseghar Waterfall

 

     At a distance of 30 km from Satara, 141 km from Pune & 294 km from Mumbai, Thoseghar Falls is a popular waterfalls located at Thoseghar village in Satara district of Maharashtra. It is one of the top waterfalls in Maharashtra and also one of the highest waterfalls in India. Thoseghar falls is among the most popular Satara places to visit and one of the best monsoon Tourist  places  near Mumbai. Thoseghar waterfall is a scenic spot located at the edge of the Konkan region. The waterfall is drops through a series of cascades with a total height of about 500 m. This is a seasonal waterfall which is only seen in monsoon and drops into a deep gorge. Thoseghar Falls is famous for its serenity, clam and quiet natural surroundings. It is a wonderful place where one can enjoy the beauty of the nature. There is a picnic area and a newly constructed platform which gives a good view of the waterfall. There is no way to enter into the falls but one can go to the starting point of the falls.

        At a distance 150 km from Pune & 308 km from Mumbai, Vajrai Falls is a picturesque waterfall located near Kas Flower Valley in Satara district of Maharashtra. This is one of the most spectacular water falls in Maharashtra.  and also one of the top monsoon Tourist places near Pune. Vajrai Falls is a three-tier waterfall cascading down from a height of around 850 feet (259 m). This is a perennial waterfall but is very spectacular during monsoons. People from different parts of Maharashtra flock to this fall during the monsoons as part of Satara  tour packages  to watch the beautiful flow of the stream. Urmodi River is believed to start from the Vajrai Waterfalls. There are many small caves near Vajrai Falls which can be visited along with the falls. The waterfall is situated near Bhambavali village in Satara district. One can reach the falls by using the personal vehicle or Alawadi Bus from Satara Bus Stand. This area is inhabited by a large number of leeches. Swimming at the waterfall is prohibited because of deep ponds.

Sajjangarh Fort :

 

       Sajjangad is an ancient hill fort and a pilgrimage place located near Satara in Maharashtra. It is one of the top places to visit in Satara and is a protected monument. Sajjangarh Fort was earlier known as Aashwalayangad and was built by the Bahamani Emperors in between 1347-1527 AD. The fort then came under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Previously known as Parali Fort, it was renamed to Sajjangad. This fort is well known as the spiritual capital of Maratha King Shivaji. The fort is located at an altitude of 918 m and has two main gates. The fort has two lakes, temples of Lord Rama, Hanuman and Anglai Devi, The fort and the tomb of Saint Ramdas are now maintained by the Ramdas Swami Sansthan and are open to devotees from sunrise to sunset. Recently Sri Ramdas Swami Sansthan trust has built a Bhaktniwas for the devotees to stay free of cost. Every year during Shiv Jayanti thousands of devotees visit the shrine. Along with its spiritual and historical ambience, Sajjangad also offers a breathtaking view of nearby villages and Satara town. It is a preferred spot for photographers who often capture the sight of the Urmodi Dam. Sajjangad is on the hilltop and one has to climb about 300 steps to reach the top.

Ajinkyatara Fort

 

        Ajinkyatara is an ancient hill fort situated on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the Sahyadri Mountains of Maharashtra. It is one of the major heritage places in Maharshtra. Situated atop Ajinkyatara Mountain, at an altitude of 3,300 feet, Ajinkyatara Fort offers a panoramic view of Satara City. Among the top places, Ajinkyatara Fort was built by Raja Bhoj of the Shilhara dynasty. In 1673 CE, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took control of this fort from Adil Sha, Shahu Maharaj won Ajinkyatara, remained with the Marathas till the British conquered the fort in 1818 AD. Earlier, Tarabai Raje Bhonsale had won this fort from the Mughals and renamed it Ajinkyatara. This was the place where Shahu Maharaj had imprisoned Tarabai. The fort is also referred to as the ‘Fort of the Sapta-Rishi’ and can be observed from the hill of Yawateshwar, which is 5 km away from Satara. This fort is surrounded by 4 m high thick walls with bastions. There were two gates. The main gate, made formidable by high buttresses, is close to the northwest corner and the small gate in the southeast corner. There are a number of water tanks inside the fort for storing water. Visitors can also visit the temples of Devi Mangalai, Lord Shankar, and Lord Hanuman on the northeast side of the fort. This place is also famous for hiking, trekking, and mountaineering.

      The best time to visit the fort is from November to February. The trek of Ajinkyatara is of easy level and hence is recommended for beginner level trekkers. There is also a motorable road that takes visitors directly to the top of the fort.

Natraj Mandir

         Uttara Chidambaram Temple, is a popular temple located off NH4, connecting Satara and Solapur. The Natraj Mandir is dedicated to Lord Natraj, a manifestation of Lord Shiva performing the Tandava dance. The foundation for the temple was laid in 1981. Samanna, a resident of Satara gifted the land for building the temple. The funding was given by the state governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu while the timber needed for the entire construction of the temple was given by the government of Kerala. It is one of the popular temples   to visit as part of Satara tour. and is a desire of Sri Chandra Shekharendra Swami. Sri Uttara Chidambaram Temple was built by the famous sculpture artist Mr. M.S. Ganapathi Sthapathi and his brother Mr. M. Mutthayya Sthapathi. Similar to the Chidambaram Temple in Tamil Nadu, the Natraj Mandir also has four large entrances on four sides. In addition to the main temple of Lord Natraj, other shrines located in the temple complex are Ganapathi Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Radha-Krishna Mandir, Shivlinga Mandir, Navgraha Mandir, Adi Shankaracharya Mandir, and Ayyappa Swami Mandir.


      The temple is under the management of Kanchi Shankara Mutt. It attracts lakhs of devotees and pilgrims to pay worship to Lord Sri Natraj. A Veda Paatasala is also being run by Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam near the temple. The temple committee organizes various cultural & spiritual programs and is a famous platform for classical dance performers.

Sangam Mahuli :

 

Sangam Mahuli and Kshetra Mahuli are two sacred villages situated at the confluence of Krishna and Venna Rivers in Satara district of Maharashtra.

Sangam Mahuli is one of the popular pilgrimage places to visit in Satara. The other side of the river Krishna is called Kshetra Mahuli. The birth place of Ramshastri Prabhune, the famous spiritual and political adviser of the fourth Peshva Madhavrav (1761-1772 CE). Mahuli was the place of meeting between the last Peshva Bajirav (1796-1817 CE) and Sir John Malcolm just before the Anglo-Maratha war was declared.

There are 2 well known temples around the convergence of the rivers – Vishweshwar and Rameshwar. Sri Kashi Vishweshwar Temple is situated in Sangam Mahuli and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built in 1735 CE by Shripatrao Pant Pratinidhi. Vishweshwar Temple was built in Hemadpanth style of architecture on the banks of River Krishna. The temple has a sabhamandap, an antarala and garbhagriha. The temple plan measures 50 feet in length and 20 feet in breadth built with basalt stone. The presiding deity Lord Shiva appeared as a lingam in the sanctorum. The sculptures inside the garbhagriha are very beautiful and very neatly carved. The walls leading to garbhagriha have niches with idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati. There is a 60 feet tall lamp-post carved out of a single stone with provision for placing oil lamps. There is a Nandi temple with exquisitely carved dome at the entrance of the temple.

Rameshwar temple is situated opposite to Vishweshwar Temple on the other side of Krishna River at Kshetra Mahuli. This temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and is quite small compared to the Vishweshwar Temple. The temple has a nagara style shikhara built with bricks and lime. Here the main Shivlingam is beautiful and is surrounded by water. Visitors need to cross the bridge on Krishna River to reach the Rameshwar Temple. The sabhamandap houses the idols of Lord Ganesha and Parvati. There is a Nandi mandap with a very ornately decorated Nandi idol. There is also a tall stone deepasthambha in the complex.
