Bhimashankar is an important pilgrimage site in the Pune district of Maharashtra, a place have religious and historical importance in the state of Maharashtra. About a 190 kilometers northwest of Mumbai, the Bhimashankar Temple is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus situated along the Western Ghats. Every Shravan month and Mondays are crowded here. Among the twelve jyotirlingas, one of Lord Shiva’s Jyotirlinga is located at Bhimashankar, making it a very important pilgrimage site for Hindus.

Bhimashankar is located on the main bank of the Sahyadri, which we call the Western Ghats and is home to dense forests, waterfalls and a variety of wildlife. This pilgrimage is also known for beautiful and natural men Bhimashankar Temple is located near the source of river Bhima and the premises of the temple are considered sacred. Bhimashankar is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindu pilgrims where devout devotees come to pray and worship Lord Shiva.

 Famous Things in Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

There is not one famous thing in Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary but quite many of them. Let’s see a few of them:

·       The Indian Giant Squirrels, and the State Animal of Maharashtra, are found here. The authorities of the sanctuary take all the required measures to ensure the survival of this species of squirrels.

·       The famous Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple and a significant Hindu pilgrimage site, is located here. The sanctuary is named after this temple. It is one of the twelve jyotirlingas in the country, and regularly frequented by pilgrims and tourists.

·        The Bird Life International has marked this sanctuary as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The sanctuary works constantly to protect some of the vulnerable, threatened and critical species of birds.
